The Willowbrook recreational department maintains and oversees a variety of parks. Classes, special events and trips are available for people of all ages. Youth programs include “Fun in the Park” as well as parent/infant classes. Kids enjoy sports such as basketball, floor hockey, girl’s softball, Little League, karate, ice-skating and more. Throughout the year adults can participate in various classes including ceramics, cooking, horsemanship, dog obedience, ice-skating and watercolor. Willowbrook Ballroom is a legendary mecca that has touched the lives of millions of big band lovers for decades. Day trips take Willowbrook residents to shopping malls, sporting events, and special attractions such as dance and theater performances in Chicago and the World Gymnastics Competition. Special seasonal activities are presented as well.
Willowbrook Wildlife Center is a favorite local attraction. Visitors can view more than 30 native species of wild animals. Windows provide a view of the center’s kitchen and nursery where baby animals are cared for and fed during the spring and summer. A picnic shelter provides a rest area, and the nature trail and wildlife habitats provide fun opportunities to learn about wildlife and the places they live.
Citizens of Willowbrook recognize the importance of providing children with a high quality education, and offer funding for a solid base of educational materials in all curriculum areas. Local students are served by a number of districts, including Gower School District 62, Maercker School District 60 and Hinsdale School District 181. High school students attend Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South high schools in district 86. Classes are sure to be small so that each child receives individual attention. Parents are encouraged to contribute their time and talents to providing a number of activities, programs and fund-raising events to provide students with a well-rounded educational experience.
Several community classes, four-year colleges and universities are an easy commute from Willowbrook. The College of DuPage, Midwestern University and Wheaton College are nearby, not to mention the numerous renowned institutions in Chicago such as University of Illinois, Loyola, Northeastern, Chicago State and several others.
Willowbrook continues to be successful because it offers an ideal location and an atmosphere that meets the needs of a diverse and dynamic community. The 3.4-square-mile village is located adjacent to Interstate 55, and Route 83 runs right through town. Interstates 294, 88 and 355 are easily accessible. Additionally, Willowbrook is just 15 miles from Chicago Midway and O’Hare airports.
